What is National History Day? debate and diplomacy logo.png

National History Day®(NHD) is a non-profit education organization based in College Park, Maryland. NHD offers year-long academic programs that engage over half a million middle- and high-school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. Since 1974, NHD has continuously improved history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators. The largest NHD program is the National History Day Contest that encourages more than half a million students around the world to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice. Students enter these projects at the local and affiliate levels, with top students advancing to the National Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. To learn more visit nhd.org.

2022 THEME NARRATIVE

Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, and Consequences

Every year National History Day® frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. Read the 2021 Theme Narrative here. For more information, please visit the Students and Teachers tabs.

The Sandusky Library and the Erie County Historical Society are proud to host Ohio's Region 2 Contest as a part of the National History Day Program!

Sandusky Library

The Sandusky Library serves as a public library in Erie County, Ohio. Incorporated in 1895, the library has a rich history in the community. Located in downtown Sandusky, the current facility is one of the early Carnegie libraries in Ohio, built in 1901, and incorporates the former Erie County Jail, built in 1883. The library's geographic service area is comprised of the school districts of Sandusky, Perkins, Margaretta, and Kelleys Island. Uniquely, the library operates a library branch on Kelleys Island and the Follett House Museum, built in 1837, which is home to historical artifacts of local interest to Sandusky and Erie County.

You can learn more about our organization at https://www.sanduskylib.org/.

Erie County Historical Society

The work of the Erie County Historical Society is to tell the story of Erie County. The story is ongoing, it is written new every day, every month, every year. What we do, think, and say is influenced by what came before us, even if we do not always acknowledge it, or even know it. History, including local history, is far from settled and is constantly changing as new information is unearthed and new filters are used to interpret what came before us. History really is alive.

You can learn more about our organization at ErieCountyOhioHistory.com.
